My child doesn't read! Do you know the reason(S)?

I often hear parents lamenting that their children do not read.First and foremost, are you doing this?

If yes, then you know the obvious thing- what to replace? Charity begins at home, and so would the change.

And if, in today's world, this is not the case with your family. Congratulations! You are instilling the age-old values which are becoming rare.

Tips to inculcate reading habits-

  1. Motivate 'Them'.. ah... 'Practice what you Preach.' Read and inspire them to read. If your child is under 8, they may lose interest when they stumble upon difficult words repeatedly. The best option that would help you bond with them uniquely is to 'Read them to Sleep' and see how their life and your bond transform.

  2.   Don't set standards or genres. P.S. The idea of Reading is not to stick to a complex book. The focus should be to enjoy reading. Fluency and vocabulary would come automatically with continuous Reading. Trust me, refined words and speedy sentences would cascade naturally.

  3.   Reading is not competing. What may interest one may bore the other to death and thus kill the spirit of Reading. Choose wisely for yourself or your child. One wrong book may result in abandoning a task forever. Yes, experiment! Books like 'Da Vinci Code' be a struggle for the first 50 pages and then turns out to be unputdownable.

  4.  Enrol in book reading sessions instead of spoken English classes. This would help you in the long run as word power and syntax would enhance constantly and consistently.

Remember, what healthy food is to your body, books are to your mind. Happy Reading, and if I may suggest COMPULSORY READING!
