INS Vikramaditya Fire Incident, probe ordered

Ludhiana : INS Vikramaditya, a modified aircraft carrier since 2013, reported a major fire on board at the Karnataka coast. The Indian Navy issued a statement informing about the incident. They further told that no casualty was reported. However, a board of inquiry has been ordered to know the exact cause.


“During a planned sortie for the conduct of trials at sea, an incident was reported on board INS Vikramaditya. The ship was operating off Karwar. The ship’s crew brought the fire under control using onboard firefighting systems. The incident took place in the evening,” the Navy said.


This is the second incident of fire on the ship. Earlier, a minor fire was reported last year in May. Previously, a young naval officer lost his life when a fire broke out on board the solitary aircraft in April 2019.


INS Vikramaditya was commissioned in the Indian Navy in November 2013 in Russia. It was formally inducted into the Indian Navy by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 14 January 2014. The cost of this aircraft carrier is a whopping $2.3 billion. Its air wing consists of MiG 29K fighter jets and Kamov Helicopters. Its home port is Karwar in Karnataka.

Height- 60 metres

Weight- 40,000 tonnes.


It basically stands up to 20-storey tall and is indeed the biggest and heaviest ship in the fleet and might of the Indian Naval Forces.
