Arora to take up with Textile Ministry opening of IIHT in Punjab
Ludhiana, February 3, 2024: No proposal is presently under consideration for opening of an Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) in Ludhiana.This has been revealed by the Union Minister of State for Textiles Darshana Jardosh in reply to a question asked by MP (Rajya Sabha) Sanjeev Arora in the ongoing budget session of Rajya Sabha. Arora had asked about the steps taken by the government to open Indian Institute of Handloom Technology in Ludhiana as Ludhiana is one of the major clusters for manufacture of Acrylics, Woolen Knitwear and all types of fibers but does not have any institute of handloom technology.
In a statement here today, Arora said the Minister further stated in his answer that there are 6 Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology (IIHTs) under the administrative control of the Office of Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, situated at Salem (Tamil Nadu), Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Guwahati (Assam), Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Bargarh (Odisha) and Fulia, Shantipur (West Bengal).The Minister also answered that Punjab comes under the authority of IIHT, Jodhpur and 3 seats for Diploma in Handloom and Textile Technology (DHTT) Course have been earmarked for Punjab.
Meanwhile, Arora said he would urge upon the Centre either to increase seats for Diploma in Handloom and Textile Technology (DHTT) Course earmarked for Punjab or make efforts to set up an IIHT at Ludhiana, which is a known cluster for Acrylics and Woolen knitwear. He added Ludhiana produced all types of products from natural and manmade fibers. It is a place known for various business families who have been in the textile business for generations.
