IAUA President Moots Country’s Agri-Education Milieu with PAU Experts

Ludhiana, March 29, 2023 : Dr Rameshwar Singh, President of the Indian Agricultural Universities Association and Vice-Chancellor of Bihar Animal Sciences University, Patna, held deliberations with Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University, and Dr Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, in the presence of the officers of both the universities. The discussions were aimed at thrashing out solutions to difficulties in the smooth functioning and progress of the academic system, research system, administration and autonomy of the universities.

Tracing the history of IAUA, Dr Rameshwar Singh revealed that it was established in 1967 and Dr P.N. Thapar, the first Vice-Chancellor of PAU was the founder President. The main objective of the Association is to promote agricultural research, education and extension in the universities and the states, and thereby rural development in the country. It also acts as a bureau of information to facilitate communication, coordination and mutual consultation among agricultural universities, he added.

Drawing attention to the rapidly changing scenario in agricultural education, Dr Singh verbalized key issues concerning new curriculum changes, the introduction of many UG programmes, disconnect with reality while framing syllabi, funding, accreditation and admissions, score card system for recruitments, anomalies in the agricultural education system, implementation of National Education Policy (NEP), multifarious problems of Krishi Vigyan Kendras and role of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). He called for a holistic approach to deal with these concerns which is broad-based as well as inclusive.

Dr Satbir Singh Gosal pointed towards the problems in signing the Memoranda of Understanding with institutions in other countries due to the time-consuming procedure of seeking permissions. Similarly, Dr Inderjeet Singh cited issues in purchasing items through GeM (Government e-Marketplace). A series of ideas, thoughts and opinions were floated by the participants during the interaction.

After much contemplation, the battery of university administrators agreed to hold regular inter-varsity dialogue to uphold the autonomy of the universities and to make a sustained effort to restore their meaningful status.
