DR PARMINDER SINGH TO HEAD THE DEPARTMENT OF FLORICULTURE AND LANDSCAPING

Ludhiana, February 23… Dr Parminder Singh has been appointed as Head, Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, PAU, Ludhiana, with effect from February 22, 2023. According to official details, Dr Parminder joined PAU in December 1996 as Assistant Professor and since then has been actively involved in teaching, research, and extension activities related to flower cultivation and landscape utilization of ornamental plants.


Dr Parminder has completed a research project funded by the Punjab Pollution Control Board as CO-PI and currently has one research project funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). His core areas of research include production technology of Marigolds, protected cultivation of Dendrobium, Gerbera, Liliums, and phytoremediation with woody and aquatic plants. Dr Singh has introduced and initiated research on several new flower and foliage crops like Phalaenopsis, Anthurium, Heliconia, Gypsophila, Solidago, and ferns for their adoption under Punjab conditions. He was associated with developing a heat-tolerant variety of marigold (Punjab Gainda no. 1). Ten of his recommendations on the production technology of marigolds and ferns, propagation of chrysanthemums, fertigation in orchid and dehydration techniques for flowers and foliage have been incorporated in the package of practices.


Author of three books, 13 book chapters, and six practical manuals, he has guided three Ph.D. and nine MSc students and is currently guiding two Ph.D. and three MSc students as a major advisor. Besides, he is an advisory member of more than 50 students across the departments. He has published 39 research papers in international and national journals of repute.


Dr. Parminder attended and delivered lectures at several national training programmes. He has authored four extension bulletins, 54 extension articles, and a seasonal flower calendar. His extension activities also include the delivery of 18 TV/radio talks, and more than 150 lectures in the field of commercial cultivation of flowers and landscape use of ornamental plants, apart from writing popular articles.


 A front runner in forming the ‘PAU Flower Growers Club’ with a current strength of more than 170 flower growers, Dr Parminder has also rendered landscape advice in many academic magazines, newspapers, and religious organizations. He has also attended a training programme on bulb production of flowering crops in the Netherlands.
