PUNJAB HEALTH MINISTER VISITS PAU TO DISCUSS EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR RURAL YOUTHS

LUDHIANA, MAY 5: The Health and Family Welfare Minister of Punjab Dr Balbir Singh visited Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) to hold parleys with the extension scientists of the Skill Development Centre regarding honing of the skills and brushing-up the knowledge of the rural youths about agriculture and allied enterprises in order to keep them on the right track and refrain them from going astray in life.

While interacting, Dr Balbir Singh voiced serious concerns over the growing unemployment and drug addiction among youths which has taken a toll on their health as well as family life. The Skill Development Centre can play an important role in moulding their lives in a positive way by sharpening their skills in various occupations such as agro-processing and value addition, mushroom growing, beekeeping, gardening, cookery, garment enrichment, etc., he observed. These occupations can generate employment opportunities and make youth job providers instead of job seekers, he added. “When the entire nation was food insecure, it was PAU and Punjab farmers that made the nation food secure collectively with their untiring efforts. Now when the youths of Punjab need to be freed from the clutches of prevailing vices, PAU can play a leading role in shaping-up their careers through agri-business and start-ups,” he stated.

Dr TS Riar, Additional Director Communication, while briefing the Punjab Minister about the contributions made by the Skill Development (SD) Centre to the sustainable livelihood of the farming community, said that being self-reliant was need of the hour. Several trainees who have acquired trainings from PAU’s SD centre under Punjab Agri Business Incubator have earned recognition and won accolades at the national level, he added.

Dr Kuldeep Singh, Associate Director (Skill Development), while welcoming the Health Minister, informed that regular vocational, short and in-service trainings were being provided to the youths so that they can sustain their livelihood by starting their own startups. He also apprised the minister of the activities of the SD centre. Dr Jagwinder Jodha, Dr Lavleesh Garg and Mrs. Gulneet Chahal were also present. Dr Rupinder Kaur, Professor of Extension Education, proposed a vote of thanks.
